Simple Logic - Daylight Saving and Polar Bears

Friday, October 23, 2009
For those of you who work with teams based in Europe or the U.S., the concept of daylight saving should be familiar. But to help clarify, here's a brief on it...

Daylight Saving Time in the US begins on the second Sunday of March and ends on the first Sunday of November. In 2009, it therefore began on Sunday, March 8 at 2 a.m. and ends on Sunday, November 1 at 2 a.m.

Time moves ahead one hour in March, whereas it moves back one hour in November (hence the saying "Spring forward, Fall back").

In many western European countries, Daylight Saving Time begins on the last Sunday of March and concludes in October on the last Sunday of that month.

Gulp... Still with me? It's not rocket science, so they say. But all this trouble, for what? Hey, I wouldn't mind having some of my colleagues explain it further...

Andy: good nite, leaving 10 mins early to get adjusted to daylight savings
Tony: I wont say an hour - as then tomorrow you will leave an hr early..
Andy: then i will be adjusted... that's the plan :)
Nabs: so you are adjusting before the adjustment!
D: We will have 5 hours between us correct. Right now we have 6
Andy: indeed
D: We and LDN will have only 4
Andy: you know, we europeans are very environmentally concerned...so we save daylight in order to save the polar bears. the darker the less warm. simple logic
D: Here in the US we are over concerned that is why we moved savings to stay until late November
Nabs: yeah we give them an extra hr to become extinct!

Ooh... "Now you know!"

(Seriously, though, Benjamin Franklin is credited with the concept of Daylight Saving Time. The basic idea is to make the best use of daylight hours by shifting the clock forward in the Spring and backward in the Fall. Daylight Saving Time has been in use throughout much of the United States, Canada and Europe since World War I.)
